Friends United Meeting
On each Saturday of the 40 Days of Prayer for the Future of Friends, we focus on some particular people and projects central to the shared work and witness of FUM.
At the start of this 40 Days of Prayer for the Future of Friends, you were encouraged to imagine possibilities arising from the several hundreds of thousands of Quakers all joined in prayer, reflection, discussion, and action for forty consecutive days. What could God possibly do in and through us in that amount of time?
Whatever comes of this season of intentional prayer, in part, depends on the faithfulness of each of us. Will I… will you… follow through on what Christ has spoken into my/your life during this time? Similarly, it depends on the faithfulness of your meeting/church. As a group, will we respond with courage and obedience to the leadings we have received? Widening the circle even further: Is your yearly meeting ready to respond to the invitation to be a gathered people—in Christ, in Community, for Mission?
At its best, FUM is not simply an organization or an institution that does mission or service work. Rather, it is a global community of Friends bound together in the common experience and Spirit of Christ. It is a group who stands together and acts for one another because we know, in our bones, we belong to each other. Finally, it is a gathering of ministers, committed to carrying out the shared mission God has imparted to us as a particular part of the Body of Christ. You are FUM.
Query for Reflection
How will God use me to help our FUM community move faithfully and fruitfully into the future?
Spend some time journaling, writing down the main openings or leadings you received over the past forty days. If there are ones which call you to take action, begin the work of formulating a plan to carry them out. If it is helpful for you, share these plans and timeline with a trusted Friend who can support you in this. Make plans for tomorrow to attend an FUM Day of Discernment gathering in your area. As you are led, consider a special gift to your local meeting/church and yearly meeting to encourage the work being done by these groups.
I give myself to you this day, O God. Help me be faithful to the way of life and the work to which you are calling me. Help me encourage other Friends to do the same.
