BAILEY Edith Bailey, 93, New Burlington Friends, Xenia, Ohio, February 15, 2000. Survivors include son and three daughters; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
BEESON Halcie Millikan Beeson, 86, Marlboro Friends, Sophia, North Carolina, March 22, 2000. Halcie Beeson served as an elder of her meeting for several years, chaired the Building Committee in 1971, and was active in the Missionary Circle and in the USFW. She also served on the Randleman Library Board, as chair of the New Market Community Building, and was recognized as Randolph County Mother of the Year in 1972. She was preceded in death by her brother Watson Millikan and her sister Hazel Davis. Survivors include her husband Colbert; son Elmer; daughters Marie Pugh, Jo Ann Short, Sue Pugh, and Karen Hinshaw; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; brother Azel Millikan; sisters Lola Davis, Marie Hill, and Ina Lee White; Bernice Davis, and Bettye Ridge.
COPE Ann R. Cope, 80, Sandy Springs Friends, Maryland, May 1, 2000. Born in South Dayton, New York, to Alfred Kennedy Reeves and Marjorie Buell Reeves, Ann also lived in Indiana, Ohio, and New Jersey as a child. She attended high school in Ithaca, New York, and graduated from Cornell UniversityŐs School of Home Economics in 1941. She married her classmate Harold Cope in 1943, and worked as a dietician in Coleville, Calilfornia, where Harold was serving in the Civilian Public Service. When they were transferred to Orlando, Florida, she taught for two years. Beginning in 1946, the Copes spent 26 years in Richmond, Indiana, where Ann was a homemaker and active in the community while Harold was an administrator at Earlham College. She began to establish strong ties with the Religious Society of Friends at this time, joining Clear Creek Meeting and later First Friends Meeting, and also serving on committees of Friends United Meeting and Indiana Yearly Meeting. In 1972, when Harold became president of Friends University in Wichita, Ann served the University and community in various ways until his retirement in 1979. She continued in her commitment to Friends, serving in the United Society of Friends Women and on the Friends World Committee for Consultation, and was a member of University Friends Meeting in Wichita. Ann and Harold were Friends in Residence at Pendle Hill in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, and Woodbrooke in England. In 1982 they spent eight months in Kenya helping Kenyans prepare for the FWCC Triennial and Friends World Conference held there. They moved to Friends House Retirement Community in Sandy Springs, Maryland, in 1984. Ann was a member of Sandy Springs Meeting, and served on the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the American Friends Service Committee, and on the boards of the Earlham School of Religion and of Sandy Spring Friends School. As well as for her life of service and faith, Ann is remembered for her love of music and for her beautiful gardens. Survivors include her husband Harold; son David; daughters Sarah Putnam, Beth McDonald, and Hannah Richter; sister Marian Reeves; brothers Alfred and Ken Reeves, and nine grandchildren.
COX Willard N. Cox, 85, Arba Friends, February 24, 2000, Richmond, Indiana. Willard was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, a grandson and a great granddaughter. Survivors include his wife Helen; daughter Victoria Myers; sons Albert, William, and James; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sisters, Dorothy Gibbs and Martha Hill.
DAVIS Evelyn L. Davis, 71, Williamsburg Friends, Indiana, May 1, 2000. Born May 18, 1928 in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Cecil and Stella Campbell Smith, she spent most of her life in the Williamsburg area. A homemaker, she was an active member of Williamsburg Friends, where she served as Sunday School superintendent and as a member of the Dorcas Society. She was also a member of the Gleaners Home Demonstration Club. Survivors include Gerald Davis, her husband of fifty years; son Randy Davis; daughters Tambrey Williamson, Talley Lester, and Tenley Horner; sister Jewell Rogers; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
FLETCHER Helen Marie Fletcher, 86, Jamestown Friends, Ohio, May 6, 2000, Dayton, Ohio. Born May 24, 1913 in Waynesville, Ohio, to Perry Larking Fletcher and Laura Hardy Fletcher, Helen was raised by her uncle Jim Fletcher after the loss of her parents at an early age. She attended Cedarville College and Bowling Green State University, and received a B.A. in education from Wittenberg College in 1951. A teacher all her life, she taught at the Teacher Training College of the Friends Africa Mission in Kenya from 1951 to 1961. Helen had become an elder at her local meeting, CaesarŐs Creek, at 26. She was active in the USFW, taught Sunday School to both youth and adults for many years, and served on Ministry and Counsel.
JONES Jean Soward Jones, 71, New Burlington Friends, Xenia, Ohio, December 15, 1999. Jean was an active member of her meeting, serving as treasurer for over 30 years. Survivors include her husband Jim; son Danny; daughter Joyce; and six granddaughters.
LEBRATO Alicia Diaz Lebrato, 88, Deep River Friends, High Point, North Carolina, February 24, 2000. Alicia was born in Holguin, Cuba, and was a well known professional seamstress and designer. She lived in Port Chester, New York, for more than 30 years, and with her daughter Edith in Jamestown, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband Jesus Lebrato, and her brother Juan Jose Diaz. Survivors include daughters Edith Lebrato Shepherd, Alicia Lebrato Sharp, Gloria Lebrato, and Alina Lebrato; sisters Candita Diaz, Bernarda Diaz-Zayas, Dr. Hilda Diaz, Esperanza Diaz-Botey, and Maria Diaz-Rumbaut; a brother Antonio Diaz; grandchildren Melissa Sharp, Katie and Michael Shepherd, Richie and Ashley Bresson, and Adrianna Bloom; and great-granddaughter Stephanie Diaz-Sharp.
MATTHEWS Bertie Hutchens Matthews, 95, Deep Creek Friends, Yadkinville, North Carolina, February 25, 2000, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was an active member of Deep Creek Friends, serving as a Sunday School teacher and in her missionary circle. A recorded minister of the North Carolina Religious Society of Friends and active in all aspects of the Yearly Meeting, she held services in Yadkin and Surry counties and served as pastor to Mount Pleasant Meeting near Galax, Virginia, for 24 years. She had previously been a member of Mt. Carmel Meeting in Lewisville, North Carolina, where she was responsible for youth and Christmas programs, taught Sunday School, and served as an elder. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman F. Matthews; infant son Howard Thomas; brothers Edgar, Buford and Clifford Hutchens; and sisters Mamie Shermer, Treva Hutchens and Fairy Hutchens. Survivors include daughter Shelby M. Shore; grandchildren Donna Shore Forbes, Walter Shore, and Franklin; great-grandchildren Shannon Shore and Ashley Dezern; sister Neva Peddycord; and several nieces and nephews.
PEELE Oland Franklin Peele, 79, Nahunta Friends, North Carolina, May 12, 2000. Born to George Frank and Effie Overman Peele, Oland attended North Carolina State University. A farmer and swine producer, he founded Nahunta Farm Sausage, and managed the Wayne County State Fair for 37 years. He received numerous awards and recognitions of achievement and was past president of the North Carolina State Swine Breeders Association, of the Wayne County Livestock Development Association, and of the North Carolina Farmers Convention, as well as a founding member of the Nahunta Grange and a former member of the Wayne County Hospital Board of Directors. He was very active in numerous other professional organizations, especially in the 4-H Club. An active member of Nahunta Friends, he served as a trustee, was Sunday School superintendent for thirteen years, and served on the Finance and Building committees. Oland was preceded in death by his brother H. Aaron Peele. Survivors include his wife of 50 years Jean Dudley Peele; sons Anthony and Gregory; grandchildren Brad and Tara Peele; and sister Ora Belle Peele Sasser.
PHILLIPS Esther Virginia Kirby Phillips, 86, Thomasville Friends, North Carolina, May 14, 2000. Esther was born January 9, 1914, in Franklin County, Ohio, to William and Alice (Cope) Kirby. A homemaker, she assisted her husband Isaac in his ministry, serving in California and Indiana as well as in North Carolina. They moved to Thomasville Friends, North Carolina, following their retirement from pastoral work where each served on Ministry and Counsel, taught Sunday School, and were members of the choir. Esther was active in USFW and particularly appreciated for her intercessory prayer life. Survivors include her husband of 62 years Isaac Newton Phillips; son Daniel; daughter Ardena; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
PIERSON Kathleen Latham Pierson, 83, College Avenue Friends, Oskaloosa, Iowa, April 3, 2000. Kathleen graduated from William Penn College in 1939, and was a teacher for many years. She was active in her meeting, serving as recording clerk for 20 years, and was a member of the United Society of Friends Women. She also belonged to the AAUW, to the Mahaska County Historical Society, and to various professional organizations. She received both the Torch Award and the Distinguished Service Award from William Penn UniversityŐs Hall of Fame. Survivors include daughter Ellen Miller; sons Edward, Wayne, Ronald, and Richard; brothers Ernest and Everett; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
SHANE Gertrude Shane, 94, Jonesboro Friends, Indiana, April 15, 2000. Born May 12, 1906, Gertrude was a member of Jonesboro Friends for over 50 years. She sang in the choir and was a member of the Loyal Crusaders. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Shane. Survivors include daughter Ilene Howard; son Ronald Shane; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
SMITH M. Josephine Smith, 88, Fountain City Friends, Indiana, April 30, 2000. Josephine was born August 21, 1911, in Chester Indiana to Charles and Grace Roberts Strader, and lived most of her life in Fountain City. A 1934 graduate of Indiana University School of Nursing, she was a retired registered nurse. Josephine was a past clerk of Fountain City Friends, had taught Sunday School there, and was also a past president of the United Society of Friends Women. She was also a member of the Fountain City Order of the Eastern Star, The Delta Theta Tau Honor Sorority, the WomenŐs Christian Temperance Union, and the Whitewater Book Club, and had been a past board member of the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband L.W. ŇBobÓ Smith in 1977; her brother Lester Strader; and a grandson. Survivors include daughters Rhoda Renschler, Martha McQuiston, and Mary Esther Jones; five grandchildren, nieces, and one nephew.
SNEED Troy F. Sneed, 88, Deep Creek Friends, Yadkinville, N.C., May 4, 2000. Born on September 12, 1911, in Surry County to Calvin and Sarah Burchette Sneed, he was a retired farmer. He was a member of Rockford Methodist Church in Surry County and had attended Deep Creek Friends Church for 65 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah Groce Sneed. Survivors include son James Allen Sneed; daughter Carol Sneed Williams; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
VENABLE Lawrence A. Venable, 83, Noblesville First Friends, March 18, 2000. Lawrence served as organist for the meeting and also on many committees.
VINEYARD Della I. Vineyard, 88, Wyandotte Friends, Oklahoma, in Miami, Oklahoma, April 29, 2000. Della was born October 1, 1911, to Leonard Harvey and Mary Ruth Stinson Vineyard in Dade County, Missouri. She later moved with her family to Oklahoma, living first near Quapaw and moving later to Wyandotte, where she lived most of her life. She received her bachelorŐs degree from Northeast State TeacherŐs College in Tahlequah, and did graduate work at Oklahoma State University, Pittsburgh State University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Wyoming. She began teaching first grade in 1931, and taught continuously for 44 years until her retirement in 1975, continuing to substitute teach for some years afterwards. Della taught Sunday School, Bible School, served as youth director, and was a member of the Friends WomenŐs Missionary Society. After her move to Miami in 1990, Della attended Miami Friends, and she became active in teacher organizations, in Delta Kappa Gamma, and in the Dobson Historical Society. Della was preceded in death by her brother Benjamin Vineyard. Survivors include sister Arbbara Lora McQuigg; nephews Jim Vineyard, Clark McQuigg, and Charles Alan McQuigg; nieces Julie Larson and Jan Thomas; six great-nephews and eight great-nieces.
WILLIAMS Ted Columbus Williams, 33, Pilot View Friends, Yadkinville, N.C., April 5, 2000. Ted graduated from Forbush Highschool in 1985 and Appalachian State University. Ted first worked at the Northwest Piedmont Council of Government in job training. He was then appointed Register of Deeds for Yadkin County in 1993 and was elected to that office in 1994 and again in 1998, the youngest person in North Carolina to hold such a post. He was a member of the Yadkinville Jaycees and served on the YMCA campaign cabinet. He was former secretary and treasurer and current vice-president of the Yadkinville Sertoma Club, and served on the Surrey Community College Steering Committee and on Yadkin CountyŐs Sesquicentennial Committee. He was a very active member of Pilot View Friends, serving as assistant superintendent of the Sunday School, on Ministry and Council, and on the Building Fund Committee. He also sang in the choir and in the Gentry and Williams Quartet. Ted was preceded in death by his father, H. Smith Williams. Survivors include his wife, Julie Myers Williams; his son, Tate Columbus; his mother, Betty Jo; his sister, Dixie Jo; his brother, H. Smith, Jr.; his nephews, Ethan and William Kilby; his nieces, Anna Katheryn Kilby and Caroline Williams, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
