Marriages Mary Hinshaw and Charlie Probasco were married November 19, 2005 at Jericho Friends Meeting, Winchester, Indiana. Deaths ANDERSON Dorotha Symons Anderson, 94, October 27, 2005, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Dorotha was born August 9, 1911 to Harry and Florence Webster (Day) Symons in Carmel. She attended Earlham College and earned her B.S. Degree in home economics at Purdue. She worked at Sunny Acres Tuberculosis Sanitarium near Cleveland, Ohio, and at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio before moving back to Carmel to care for her mother. Dorotha was a very active member of Plainfield Friends Meeting where she sang in the choir and worked with the Migrant Ministry, Indian Affairs, Plainfield Church Federation and USFW. She was also a member of Meals on Wheels, Home Economics Club, Farm Bureau, Great Books Club and the Hendricks County Ramblers. Along with giving violin lessons, Dorotha also had an egg route, sold vegetables from her garden and visited the sick and the home-bound as well as read to individual residents at Plainfield Heath Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Anderson. Survivors include her son John H. (Debbie) Anderson; two grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. BRADY Virgil Clay Brady, 85, March 10, 2006, Asheboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Virgil was born to Onslow and Vermillia Moffitt Brady on February 6, 1921. He was a Navy cook and baker aboard various battle cruisers during World War II. He then worked for Central Bakery, P&P Chair Company and Central Telephone Company. Virgil was married to Lola Cole on July 29, 1949 at the Asheboro Friends Meeting where they became members in 1951. He was an active member through the Friendly Friends Sunday School Class, Quaker Men, as well as Clerk of Monthly Meeting and on many committees and the choir. In 1992 Virgil was honored as “Man of the Year” by Asheboro Friends Meeting. After his retirement, he helped others in need by installing extra phone lines for those who would benefit from easier access and installed numerous emergency life lines for those living alone. As a result of his compassion, the Helping Hand Fund was established in his meeting to aid those needing assistance with rising fuel costs. Virgil was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence Coggins, Rose Parrish and Bertha Gray. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lola; one sister, Marie Burrow; and several nieces and nephews. BRYANT John H. Bryant, 67, December 1, 2005, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Born on August 24, 1938 John served in the U.S. Air Force for 32 years. He had a B.A. degree in Philosophy from Marian College, and postgraduate from Earlham School of Religion. As a member of Plainfield Friends Meeting, he sang in the choir. Along with sharing his mind, John also generously helped others in need with education, medical and housing bills. Survivors include his wife, Kathe Sommer Bryant; one son, Jeffery C. Bryant; and two granddaughters, Sarah R. and Anna E. CARROLL John William “Bill” Carroll, 74, November 29, 2005, Deep River Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Bill was born on March 6, 1931 to Felix Alvin and Addie Doss Carroll. In 1950 he married Janie Thornton. At Deep River Friends, he served as Chairman of the Trustees, was the choir director for 21 years and participated in several other musical endeavors. He was the owner of Northwood Oil and was a charter member, treasurer and Assistant Chief of the Deep River Fire Department as well as President of the N.C. Petroleum Marketers. Bill helped start the Deep River Community Watch and was on the High Point Board of Adjustments in the Planning and Zoning Department. Survivors include his wife, Janie; three daughters, Joyce (Gary) Ingold, Alice Carroll and Susan (Randy) Jones; one son, John Carroll Jr.; one sister, Lura Southard; one brother, Felix Carroll Jr.; six grandchildren, David (Tonya) Smith, Jeffery (Candice) Jones, Leslie (Keith) Griffin, Leah Ingold, Jennifer Jones and Jessica Jones; and one great granddaughter, Hannah Smith. CHENOWETH Juanita Chenoweth, 101, November 9, 2005, Jericho Friends Meeting, Indiana. Juanita was born September 28, 1904 to Fred and Fannie Ingle.She was an active member of Jericho Friends Meeting and generously contributed to help build a large addition for fellowship and activities to the back of the church. She also contributed to the YMCA Chenoweth Child Care Center to help provide child care for many young children in Randolph County. Juanita was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, William Bowen Chenoweth; one son, Bobby Chenoweth; one sister, Bernice Blank; four half brothers, William, Grant, Fredric and Solomon; and one half sister, Mary. Survivors include one son, Edwin James (Francie) Chenoweth; two daughters, Patricia Belle (Edward) Lord and Suzanne (Harold) Arquette; 13 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. COLLETT Wallace Tibbals Collett, 91, May 9, 2006, Haverford Friends Meeting, Pennsylvania. Wallace was a graduate of Wilmington College, Ohio, and chaired the Wilmington College Board and was on the boards of Earlham and Haverford colleges. Wallace was awarded honorary doctorates by both Wilmington and Haverford Colleges. He was a Quaker leader and businessman, who led delegations to both South and North Vietnam accompanying relief supplies on behalf of the American Friends Service Committee. He also led Quaker delegations to China, the Middle East and Central America. He chaired the Friends Committee on War Tax Concerns and was a board member of the Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund. In 1960 he helped found the Servomation Corporation and chaired its board’s Executive Committee. Wallace was a founder and board member in Cincinnati of Housing Opportunities Made Equal and of Camp Joy, a camp for underprivileged children. As a board member of the Cincinnati Historical Society, he helped with the creation of the Cincinnati Museum Center at the Union Terminal and also helped in initiating a Cincinnati street tree program as chair of the Mayor’s Committee for Urban Greenery. Wallace authored the book McCarthyism in Cincinnati: The Bettman- Collett Affair and published a collected volume of his poetry, The Enchanted Moment. He is also known for his “painted” pictures, which he created using a typewriter and color; his 1982 picture “They Fall Westward Toward the River” has been exhibited recently at Friends Center in Philadelphia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Hudson Collett. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Stella Miller-Collett; three children, Jonathan (Charlotte), Jane (Clark) and Stephen (Berit); 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. COMER Mary Audrea Comer, 85, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Mary was the daughter of Hobart Aaron Cox and Nellie Tisor Cox. She was a member Winchester Friends Church, the Randolph County Home Economics Club and taught piano and organ for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen C. Comer, and one grandson. Survivors include two daughters, six grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren, and two sisters-in-law. DAVIS Lola Millikan Davis, 88, May 20, 2006, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Lola was born August 12, 1917, to Troy Watson and Blanch Pierce Millikan. She was retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture in High Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford Elkanah Davis; five children and five siblings. Survivors include two daughters, Judith Gaster and Halcie Small; three sons, Dale Davis, Tommy Davis and Lester Davis; three sisters, Marie Hill, Ina Lee White and Bernice Davis; 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. DAVIS R.S. “Sonny” Davis, 75, March 10, 2006, Cedar Square Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Sonny was born December 28, 1930 to Branson and Veva Allred Davis. He attended High Point College. In February 1951, he married Gwendolyn “Gwen” Plummer and they lived on the Davis Dairy Farm. He was an active member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Trustee and Co-Chairman of the Building Committee. Sonny was active in the New Market Grange and the New Market Civitan Club. As a dedicated Republican, he served as New Market Precinct Chairman and also Randolph County Chairman. He was elected to the Randolph County Board of Education, where he served 12 years, 10 of which as Chairman. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Gwen; three sons, Robert B. (Laresa) Davis, J. Kemp (Karen) Davis and John D. (Amanda) Davis; two daughters, Sandy D. (Kerry) Martin and Lee Ann D. (Jim) Ball; 12 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and three sisters, Martha D. Modlin, Jean D. Swiggett and Doris D. Cashatt. GILPIN Viva F. (Trieschman) Gilpin, 85, March 23, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Born on June 21, 1920, she was the daughter of Daniel and Minnie Trieschman of Fort Recovery, Ohio. She married Donald V. Gilpin on August 15, 1943. She was a homemaker, a member of the Winchester Friends Church and a member of the U.S.F.W. Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald V. Gilpin on April 30, 1958; two brothers, Ray Trieschman and Don Trieschman; and one great-grandchild. Survivors include two sons, Vern (Linda) Gilpin and Jerald Gilpin; two step-grandchildren, Robert (Alicia) Buchman and Allen (Jennifer) Buchman; and three great-grandchildren. HALL Dea Ruth Hall, 83, April 7, 2006, First Friends Church, Marion, Indiana. Dea was born to Lowell and Edith Cochran on May 27, 1923. She received her B.A. degree from Ball State Teachers College and her Masters Degree from Ball State University. On August 20, 1950 she married Lymon B. “Pete” Hall. During her teaching career, Dea taught music and art at various schools in Anderson, Van Buren and Marion. She also directed church choirs at Van Buren United Methodist Church and First Friends Church in Marion. For 44 years she was an active member of First Friends Church. Survivors include her husband, Pete; two daughters, Joy (Brian) Ritenour and Kay (Jim) Brooks; one son, Dr. Douglas (Cindy) E. Hall; three brothers, Charles (Peggy) Cochran, John (Lou Ann) Cochran, Paul Mark (Catherine) Cochran; one sister, Barbara (Wilbur) Umberger; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. HANCOCK Donald Lloyd Hancock, 73, April 30, 2006, Archdale Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Donald was born on February 20, 1933 to Obed and Peggy Hancock. On September 8, 1953, he married Belva Jean Frazier. As a member of Archdale Friends Meeting, he taught Sunday School, served on various committees, Ministry and Counsel, served as clerk of Monthly Meeting and was a member of the choir. Donald was a graduate of High Point College, UNC-Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University. He was a teacher and later principal of Randleman High School, from which he retired in 1985. He was president of the N.C. Principals Association, a member of the Archdale/Trinity Lions Club where in 1987, he was honored with Citizen of the Year award. He was elected to Archdale City Council and served as Mayor of Archdale for four terms; served on the Randolph County Planning board; received the Archdale Trinity Jaycees Distinguished service award; was a 10 year representative of the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority; was former youth basketball coach with the Boys Club Athletic Program and YMCA. Donald also volunteered with Communities in Schools of Randolph County. He has been a realtor for the last several years. Survivors include his wife, Belva; two sons, Stephen T. (Lisa) Hancock and Lloyd Kent (Carla) Hancock; one brother, Jim (Joann) Hancock; and four grandchildren, Meghan and Madison Hancock and Drew and Austin Hancock. HAYNES Edith Anna Hailing Haynes, First Friends Church, Alhambra, California. Edith was born September 17, 1914 on the family farm near Plainview, Nebraska, and was the only one of her siblings to live past the age of 2. She taught Sunday School for 70 years, beginning when she was only 12. Edith went to Nebraska Central College in Central City, Nebraska, and held a secretarial job with Nebraska Yearly Meeting. After graduating, she spent a term with the American Friends Service Committee in a settlement house program in Philadelphia. Edith then moved to Alhambra, California, and taught for 36 years where she pioneered team teaching and a program for Educationally Handicapped students—she received state, national and international recognition. Edith held leadership roles for Friends Committee on National Legislation in California. At First Friends Church she was named Minister of Prison Visiting and also organized a shelter program for the homeless. After her retirement in 1977, she organized Children’s Peace Camps. As a 50-year member of the American Association of University Women, Edith received the Las Distinguidas award for outstanding contribution to the community in 1997. On May 17, 1953 Edith married Gerald Haynes, who she had met as a result of her work with AFSC. Survivors include two sons, Eric (Kim) Haynes and Roscoe (Joanne) Haynes; one daughter, Shamsi; and two grandsons Brett and Matthew Haynes. HODSHIRE Mary Marie Peters Hodshire, 82, October 31, 2005, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Mary was born October 6, 1923 to Irvin and Mable Peters. Along with being a homemaker, Mary was a member of the Quaker Homebuilders, the Homemakers Club, the Home Economics Club and the Bowling Congress. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Oliver Hodshire. Survivors include one son, James L. Hodshire; one daughter, Jane M. Mundy; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. HUDELSON Olive E. Hudelson, 88, May 14, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Olive was born on December 4, 1917 to Everett and Mabel Treval Stegall. She received her nursing degree from Reid Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond. She worked as a registered nurse in a local doctor’s office and at Randolph County Hospital. Olive was preceded in death by her husband, William Burton Hudelson; and one brother, Paul Stegall. Survivors include three daughters, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great-grandson, three step-greatgranddaughters, one niece and nephew. HUFFMAN Frankie Lee McVey, 73, May 21, 2006, Cane Creek Friends Church, North Carolina. Frankie was born to Thomas and Martha Ladd McVey on March 15, 1933. She worked at Louise’s Hallmark. Survivors include her husband, Clinton Odell Huffman; three children, Catherine O’Dell, Blair Thompson and Lisa Huffman; five grandchildren, Christy Doby, Cameron Doby Messick, Daniel Thompson, Jonathan Thompson and Drew Thompson; four sisters, Nancy Steohr, Vicky McVey, Grey Gwinn and Betsy Riley; and two brothers, Gene McVey and Monroe McVey. KEY Mattie Sue Harbour Key, 78, April 1, 2006, Pine Hill Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Mattie was born on June 17, 1927 to Escar Curtis and Elsie Ellen Badgett Harbour. While being a homemaker, she also served in various capacities in her meeting including being a Sunday School teacher, former elder and an active member of Circle II. Survivors include three daughters, Judy (David) Hayes, Kathy (Bill) Branch and Cheryl Jordan; one son, Terry C. Key; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one sister, Pearl H. (James) Royal; and one brother, Wade (Hilda) Harbour. LIGHTFOOT Lucille Lightfoot, 79, March 13, 2006, Hemlock Monthly Meeting, Indiana. Lucille was born on November 22, 1926 and married to Glen Lightfoot on January 28, 1945. One of Lucille’s joys was teaching children about Jesus, which she did through Sunday School and Daily Vacation Bible School. She was also an active member of Hemlock Friends and served as cochairman of the USFW Christian Service Committee, during which time hundreds of layettes were sent to the Friends Hospital in Lugulu. She was a member of the Gideon Auxiliary and worked in prison ministry for 20 years. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Reid Lightfoot. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Glen; three sons, Gary (Beth), Lynn (Susan) and Paul (Connie); four granddaughters, two grandsons and four great-grandchildren. MARSH Ila Inman Marsh, May 6, 2006, Pine Hill Friends, North Carolina. Ila was the daughter of Willie Martin and Amanda Elizabeth Cox Inman. She was an active member of Pine Hill Friends for 50 years. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Glenn Gray Marsh; two daughters, Glenda (Douglas) Marsh Talley and Sharon (Marty) Marsh Marshall; two grandchildren, Ann Elizabeth Talley and Crystal (Jimmy) Upchurch; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Madison Upchurch; one half brother, Jimmie (Betty) Inman; one half-sister, Evelyn (Jimmy) Stone; a brother-in-law, John Key; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Marsh. McDOWELL The Rev. George Milby McDowell, 91, March 22, 2006, Back Creek Friends Meeting, North Carolina. George was born November 10, 1914, a son of Eli Linville McDowell and Martha Pierce McDowell. He was employed at Bossong Hosiery Mill for 29 years until being called into the ministry in 1960 where he served both Back Creek Friends Meeting and Science Hill Friends Meeting until 1972; he then became full time pastor of Back Creek Friends Meeting where he remained until his retirement in 1983. On August 3, 1935 he married Dorothy “Dot” Winslow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dot and one daughter, Carolyn Cox. Survivors include four sons; G. Kenneth (Kathy) McDowell, Jerry (Joy) McDowell, Nolan (Joyce) McDowell and Steve (Judy) McDowell; 10 grandchildren, Sharon (Bill) Stricker, Damon Cox, Dwaine Cox, Pamela V. MILLIKAN Azel Newton Millikan, 90, March 22, 2006, South Plainfield Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Azel was born September 6, 1915, to Troy Watson and Blanch Pearce Millikan. He was a founding partner of H&M Grocery in Sophia and owner of W&W Curb Market in Randleman. He was also a dairy farmer who spent the last 25 years farming and raising horses. Azel was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Hollingsworth Millikan, one brother, Watson Millikan, and three sisters Betty Ridge, Halcie Beeson and Hazel Davis. Survivors include one son Joey (Anita) Millikan; three grandchildren, Troy Millikan, Ben Millikan and Joseph Millikan; and four sisters, Lola Davis, Marie Hill, Bernice Davis and Ina Lee White. MUDAMBA Meshack Lugalia Mudamba, 74, March 26, 2006, Kakamega Yearly Meeting, Kenya. Meshack was born July 23, 1932 in Masiyenze Village, Iguhu Location, Kakamega District to Luti Mudamba and Rhoda Madila, and was raised in the Friends Church. He completed his education at Kaimosi Intermediate School in 1954, and entered public service as a primary school teacher, and later as a clerk in the civil service. In 1955 he married Jeridah Mbaya of Shinyalu Division, and they were blessed with one son and seven daughters. Upon retirement from the civil service, Meshack became an evangelist with the Friends Church. He traveled widely in the ministry, including a visit to the United States. He served as Regional Superintendent of Musingu Region, Kakamega Yearly Meeting, and as chaplain to Musingu High School. In working together with his long-time ministry partner, Edith Radcliff, Meshack touched thousands of hearts with the word of God. Survivors include his wife Jeridah, eight children, and many grandchildren. NEELEY Mary Helen Lumpkin Neeley, 81, September 11, 2005, Plainfield Friends Meeting, Indiana. Mary was born October 21, 1917 to Newby and Agnes Lumpkin. She was a member of Plainfield Friends and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Earnest Nester and Walter Neeley, and one daughter, Phyllis Wylie. Survivors include six children, Barbara Wilburn, Bill Nester, Don Nester, Helen Louise Neeley, Nancy Poe and Debbie Davis; one sister, Marcella Newman; one step-brother, Bill Ping; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. OWEN John E. Owen, 71, April 21, 2006, West Richmond Friends Meeting, Indiana. John was born on April 13 1935 to Ellsworth and Louise Owen. In 1957, he graduated from Earlham College, where he later worked as Director of Admissions, Director of Financial Aid, Associate Vice President for Development, Director of Planned Giving, Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Director of Development for the Earlham School of Religion. He was also a faculty leader for Earlham’s wilderness programs. At Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, he served as Associate Vice President for Development. His professional associations included the State Scholarship Commission of Indiana, National Merit Scholarship Corporation Selection Committee, President of Indiana Association of College Admissions Counselors, Great Lakes College Association, Trustee for College Entrance Examination Board, Associated Colleges of Indiana and Council for Advancement and Support of Education. His service and involvements in his community included United Way of Richmond, Clerk of First Friends Meeting Friends, Friends Association for Higher Education, member and Trustee of West Richmond Friends Meeting, President of Quaker Haven Foundation Board, member of Hoosier Corners Square Dance Club and Friends World Committee for Consultation. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Julie Hunt Owen; three daughters, Karen Owen (Richard) Zimmermann, Janet Owen and Margaret Owen (Mark) Gesner; one son, David Owen; four granddaughters, Katherine, Laura and Margaret Zimmermann and Sarah Gesner; and one brother, Robert Owen. ROBBINS Nancy Ruth Robbins, 79, March 30, 2006, Winchester Friends Church, Indiana. Nancy was born to Floyd and Mae Hanford on March 29, 1928. She married Kenneth Robbins on May 3, 1947 at Centerville Friends Church, Indiana. She was an owner/operator of Archway Gift Shop in Centerville as well as working at two other gift shops in Richmond. She was active in the Richmond Circle U Help Center and Yokefellows. Nancy was often involved in church committees and activities. She was preceded in death by her sister and grandson. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; two daughters, Cathleen Spaulding and Karen Edwards; three sons, Jim, Bruce and Keith Robbins; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. ROCKETT Clairice White Rockett, 85, May 7, 2006, Centre Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Clairice was born on December 31, 1920, to Edward and Lena Peace White. She was a homemaker and a member of the Woody Circle at Centre Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Lee, Billy Ray and Worth White and two grandchildren, Jason and Ashley Cornelius. Survivors include her husband, Harvey Rockett; two daughters, Judy R. (James) Bishop and Pamela Rockett; two grandchildren, Leisha Bishop and Karen Boone; and one great-grandchild, Jesse Boone. SPENCER Clyde Roscoe Spencer, 79, March 14, 2006, Marlboro Friends Meeting, North Carolina. Clyde was born on May 13, 1926, to Jasper Eugene Spencer and Bessie Flack Spencer. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the 2nd Infantry of the U.S. Army. Clyde and his son operated the family farm, which has been a continuous family operation for over 100 years. Survivors include his wife, Kathlene Spencer; and two children, Randall Clyde (Patricia R.) Spencer and Emily Sue Spencer (Dean) Styles; two step-grandchildren, Daniel James Olson and Leslie Ann Olson; and one sister-in-law, Mildred Spencer. SMITH Hazel Cronk Smith, 89, March 31, 2006, Bloomington Friends, Indiana. Hazel was born January 12, 1917 to Howard and Netta Moon Cronk. She graduated from Earlham College in 1938 and married Raymond G. Smith in the same year. A life-long Friend, Hazel grew up in Plainfield, Indiana and later settled in Bloomington where she was a founding member of Bloomington Friends Meeting as well as Clerk of Ministry and Counsel. Hazel was active in community service with 50 years service to Church Women United. She also spent many years with Monroe County United Ministries and in 1968 was one of three women who opened Opportunity House, a resale shop for low-income families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond. Survivors include her sister, Barbara Diehl and a special cousin, Harold Thomas. TATUM Lyle E. Tatum, 87, April 3, 2006, Haddonfield Monthly Meeting, New Jersey. Lyle was born in West Branch on October 26, 1918 to Chio and Elmer Tatum. He married Elizabeth “Bickie” Lindsay in 1942. After her death, he married Florence Giffin. He graduated from Iowa State College with a political science major in 1942. In 1943, when the draft board refused to grant him conscientious objector status, Lyle went to prison. When he was paroled, he taught at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia and served five years as Executive Director of the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors. Lyle spent four years as AFSC South Africa representative, and was evicted for hosting a black guest. Upon his return from Africa, he became the Executive Secretary of Farmers and World Affairs while also consulting with AFSC on a project to help psychologists train police officers in lowering the level of violence in their work. He served as Urban Affairs representative for Haddonfield Friends Meeting and as Executive Director of the South Jersey Foundation. Lyle also served as Secretary of the Peace Education Division of AFSC and in 1976, the Bicentennial Coordinator for Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. He remained on-call for other Quaker work, including being a Quaker United Nations representative and in 1987 he edited the revised edition of AFSC’s book, South Africa: Challenge and Hope. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Florence Giffin Tatum; one son, Steven Tatum; one daughter, Susan Taylor; four stepchildren, Jeannine, Brian, Diane Fernsler and Larry Giffin Tatum; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. WAUDO Alfred Siminyu Waudo, 63, April 23, 2006, Nairobi Yearly Meeting and East Africa Yearly Meeting North, Kenya. Alfred was born on 9 February 1943 in Navakholo Village, Bunyala Location, Kakamega District, Kenya. He was the fifth-born child in a family of fourteen children of Thadayo Wambuji and Resa Nekesa of the Abatecho Clan. His parents were first generation Quakers and he was raised in a strong Christian home. Alfred graduated from Nairobi University in 1969 with a B.Sc. in Engineering and worked for 35 years as a civil engineer; he was highly respected in his field, both nationally and throughout East Africa. In 1969 Alfred married Rita Shitunduhu Shiakaba of Isukha Location, and together they had eight children. His commitment to the Friends Church, and his generosity of time, talent and treasure, involved him in many Friends activities. He donated his professional services for numerous Friends construction projects, and was instrumental in the development of the new Friends International Centre meetinghouse on N’gong Road in Nairobi. As Chairman of the Samburu Friends Mission (under Friends United Meeting) since the inception of the mission in 1995, he brought wise leadership and a commitment to a holistic gospel mission. Survivors include his wife Rita, six children, and eight grandchildren. WOOTEN Harold Mills Wooten, 84, May 21, 2006, Deep Creek Friends Church, North Carolina. Harold was born on September 26, 1921, to Will and Treva Wooten. He was a faithful and active member of Winston-Salem Friends before moving to Yadkinville and attending Deep Creek Friends Church. After 30 years of service, he retired from Piedmont Airlines. He is preceded in death by his sister, Lois Wooten. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Helen P. Wooten; three children, Carol (Bobby) Southard, Joel (Frances) Wooten and Lynn (Rob) Feers; nine grandchildren, Tyler and Kathy Wooten, Richard, Anna, Daniel and Sarah Feero, Regina Allen, Bryan Southard and Daryl Southard; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ruth (Mark) Adams, Willena Moore and Faye (Ralph) Nelson.
