ANDERSON Helen B. Anderson, 88, February 21, 2008, Noblesville Friends, Indiana. Helen was born April 30, 1919, to Charles and Anna Scott Walton. She graduated from Noblesville High School. She served as treasurer for a number of years at Noblesville Friends Church and was an active member in the Lydia Circle of the United Society of Friends Women. She worked for several years as a secretary at Hamilton Heights Junior High School, in the Hamilton County Auditor’s office and as a farm wife. She was married to Glenn Anderson who preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by sons, Tony (Sue) Anderson and Tom (Pat) Cicero; daughters, Marsha (John) Christy and Connie (Mike) Cook; sister, Betty Lou (Herbert) Boone; eight grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held February 25 at Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel with Pastor Robert Stubbs officiating. BEANE Maxine Evelyn (Hoover) Beane, 91, February 12, 2008, LeGrand Friends, Iowa. Maxine was born on December 31, 1916, to Quaker parents, Clyde E. and Margaret Keen Hoover, on a farm near LeGrand, Iowa. She graduated from LeGrand High School in 1934 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She married Ercil Victor Beane in a traditional unprogrammed Quaker ceremony at LeGrand Friends Church on November 26, 1938. She and Ercil lived on and operated his family farm north of LeGrand for 2 years before moving to her childhood farm where they lived for almost 66 years and where she was an active partner in all phases of the farm. Maxine was very involved in Friends programs on the local level, as well as in national and international leadership roles. She served as program editor and president of the United Society of Friends Women International. During the six years of her presidency, she participated in meetings across North America, as well as Kenya, Palestine, Greece, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Thailand, India, Persia, England, Jamaica and Central America. She also served on the board of governors of the Earlham School of Religion, as well as the Friends United Meeting General Board. Maxine worked extensively with her husband in many countries in Africa, Asia, the Mid-East, Europe, Central and South America, lecturing on the philosophy of life and the chiropractic profession. Together they encouraged and supported many foreign students in the study of chiropractics. As a team they developed Chiropractic Live Research Centers in numerous (69) countries. For her service and significant contributions to the Philosophy, Science and Art of Chiropractics she was granted an honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities Degree from Sherman College of Chiropractics, South Carolina. She is survived by five children, David (Judy) Beane, Daniel (Sarah) Beane, Marian Beane, Evan (Cindy) Beane and Joel (Rita) Beane; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Matthew Beane. Memorials may be made to the United Society of Friends Women International, American Friends Service Committee or Right Sharing of World Resources. BRADY Swannie E. Brady, 88, March 7, 2008, Prosperity Friends, North Carolina. Mrs. Brady was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. A lifetime member of Prosperity Friends meeting, she served as an elder, Sunday school teacher and an active member of the United Society of Friends Women. Surviving are son, Bill (Judy) Scott; two grandsons; two greatgrandsons; and step-children, Virginia Comer and Malcom Brady. Funeral services were held March 9 at Prosperity Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Michael Fulp officiating. Donations may be made to Prosperity Friends Meeting or First Health Hospice Pinehurst. DAVIS Alvin Gray Davis, 85, January 26, 2008, Pilot View Friends, North Carolina. Alvin was born January 11, 1923, to Eugene and Etta Matthews Davis. He was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Mr. Davis was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired brick mason, carpenter and farmer and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Grace Davis; two brothers, Arzie Davis and Dalton Davis; and a step-son, Robbie Brown. Surviving are his wife, Inez Brown Davis; three children, Steve Gray (Norma) Davis, Rhonda (Ray) Vestal and Lisa (Bobby) Wishon; four stepchildren, Brenda (Jay) Meenach, Glenda (Mike) Booker, Loretta (Haywood) Barker and Karen (Keith) Googe; two sisters, June Holcomb and Peggy York; a brother, Jackie Davis; two special friends, Maye Adams and Calvin Hutchens; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted January 29 at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Revs. Nelson Puffenbarger, Ray Davis and Jake Penley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. Memorials may be made to Gideon’s International. ENGLISH Faye Walker English, 98, February 20, 2008, Archdale Friends, North Carolina. Faye was born March 18, 1910, to James Milton and Ora Parrish Walker. A dedicated educator, she attended Randolph County schools, Elise Academy in Robbins, Appalachian State and then went on to share her knowledge and passion for mathematics as a Randolph County public school teacher. She was a devoted member of the Archdale Friends Meeting and a teacher of the Elizabeth Fry Sunday school class for many years. Mrs. English actively served in the missionary department of the meeting and the North Carolina Yearly Meeting Committee on Missions, acting in various capacities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Roland English; and son, Thomas Roland English Jr. Survivors include sons, Nereus Clarkson English III and James (Karen) Walker English; daughter-in-law, Kay English; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held February 23 at Archdale Friends Meeting. Donations may be made in her memory to Archdale Friends Meeting or Friends Homes Greensboro. GRAHAM Blair McIver Graham, 78, February 25, 2008, Hood Swamp Friends, North Carolina. Blair was born December 30, 1929, to the late Norman Turner Graham and Della Watkins Wicker. He was a financial planner and insurance salesman in Goldsboro. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Blair is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith Graham; son, James Smith Whitley Sr.; and grandson, James Smith Whitley Jr. Graveside services were held February 27 with McGee Smith and the Rev. George C. Lee officiating. Memorials may be made to Hood Swamp Friends Meeting. GUNTER Vernelle McBane Gunter, 83, January 27, 2008, Chatham Friends, North Carolina. Vernelle was born February 20, 1924, daughter of the late Lay Banks and Esther (Braxton) McBane. She is survived by her husband, Raeford H. Gunter; one sister, Anna M. Byrd; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held January 30 at Brookdale Baptist Church with the Revs. David Hobson and Christopher St. Jean officiating. Memorials may be made to Chatham Friends Meeting Memorial or Cemetery Fund. HILL Cecil Ray Hill, 80, March 2, 2008, Poplar Ridge Friends, North Carolina. Cecil was born August 24, l927, son of the late Charlie L. and Venia H. Hill. He grew up in Archdale and was a resident of Randolph County all his life. He graduated from Trinity High School and was a charter member of the Guil-Rand Fire Department where he served as assistant fire chief and was instrumental in organizing the Archdale Rescue Squad. He was owner and operator of Hill Tire Service for many years. In l988 he retired from the city of High Point as the director of off-street parking. On June 27, l947, he married Joyce Scoggin who survives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia White; and sister, Eva H. Sherrill. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Steve (Sylvia) Hill; a brother, Quinton (Luanne) Hill; a sister, Jeanette (Ron) Davis; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 5 at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting with Pastor Randall A. Quate officiating. Memorials may be directed to Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting or to Hospice of the Piedmont. HUBBARD Art Hubbard, 69, March 18, 2008, Sycamore Friends, Indiana. Art was a member of the Indiana Yearly Meeting Ministry and Oversight Committee. He is survived by his wife, Leah Joyce; three children; and nine grandchildren. The funeral was March 22 at Sycamore Friends. Memorials may be sent to Sycamore Friends for two programs with which Art was involved: Master Builders Program which does woodworking projects and Scripture memorization with 4-6 grade children and Mother’s Morning Out which allows mothers to leave their children at the church for a morning while they do errands. JESTER Blaney Mae Wooten Jester, 68, March 1, 2008, Branon Friends, North Carolina. Blaney Mae was born October 4, 1939, to the late Miles and Maggie Heath Wooten. She was a devoted homemaker and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 18 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Jester; and four brothers. Surviving are her loving husband of 52 years, Allen G. Jester; two daughters, Teresa Brown and Sandra Riggs; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers; three sisters; and her special dog, Hanna. A graveside service was conducted March 3 at Branon Friends Meeting Cemetery, with the Rev. Hewey Parrish and Pastor Joe Reece officiating. Memorials may be made to Memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. JONITIS Peter Paul Jonitis, 94, June 8, 2007, Durham Friends, Maine. Peter Paul Jonitis was born in West Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on April 23, 1913, to Alice and John Jonitis, Lithuanian immigrants. He cherished his ancestry and wrote several articles about Lithuania during his academic career. Peter married Elizabeth Wright in 1946 and the two celebrated 61 years of marriage. Peter graduated from Clark University in 1939 and completed his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1951. He joined the Bates College faculty from 1953–67, then was chair and professor of sociology at Florida Southern College until 1974. During the late 1970s, Peter was co-host (with Elizabeth) at Davis House, Washington D.C., an international guest house under the care of the American Friends Service Committee. In 1981-82 he was the T. Wistar Brown Fellow at Haverford College, Pennsylvania, researching “The Quaker Contribution to Early American Penology: 1773-1830.” In 1984 Peter was commissioned by the Governor of the State of Maine as a member of the board of visitors to Maine State Prison at Thomaston. Peter, a recorded minister in New England Yearly Meeting, served the Society of Friends in various capacities. A high point in Peter’s life of which he spoke often was the year 1959-60 when he, with his family, taught at the Ramallah Friends Schools in Palestine. Peter is preceded in death by his son, Peter Paul Jr. Survivors include a daughter, Karen (Don) Rhoda; four grandsons; and three great-grandsons. LAWRENCE Martha Jane Craven Lawrence, 75, February 3, 2008, Holly Spring Friends, North Carolina. Martha was a 1950 graduate of Franklinville High School and a 1952 graduate of Lees McRae College. She was a member of the American Medical Records Association and retired from Randolph Hospital. In retirement, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was an insurance adviser. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Lawrence Sr. Survivors are son, John Robert Lawrence Jr.; daughters, Jane (Darrell) Black and Elizabeth (Greg) Heaton; brother, William Clyde Craven Jr.; sister, Edith Craven Keen; three grandchildren; and four nieces and their families. Funeral services were held February 6 at Holly Spring Friends Meeting conducted by the Rev. Ricky Sessoms. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph County or to the Alzheimer’s Association - Piedmont Chapter. MARSTALLER Louis J. Marstaller, 87, June 18, 2007, Durham Friends, Maine. Louis was born in Brunswick, Maine, on May 5, 1920, son of Ernest F. and Lelia S. Gatchell Marstaller. He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1937, from Wentworth Institute in Boston in electrical construction in 1939 and from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, in 1942, with a B.A. in political science. Louis worked under the AFSC in civilian public service as a conscientious objector from 1943-46, in forestry and fighting forest fires in Oregon. Louis married Clarabel Hadley in 1948. He served as presiding clerk for Durham Friends from 1951-53 and worked part-time as field secretary of New England Yearly Meeting from 1957-82. He traveled over New England, visited Friends meetings, arranged for the annual session and worked to develop the youth camp in South China, Maine. He was on the American Friends Board of Missions of Five Years Meeting (now FUM) in the 1950s as a representative to FCNL and was a representative to the FWCC World Conference in Oxford, England, in 1952. He is survived by his wife, Clarabel; four children, David, Nancy (David) Brooks, Robert (Judy) and Thomas (Betsy); a sister, Lelia Taylor; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a nephew; a niece; and two great-nephews. A memorial service was held on June 23, 2007, at Durham Friends meetinghouse. MOON Phoebe Eleanor Moon, 88, February 16, 2008, South Fork Friends, North Carolina. Mrs. Moon was born February 23, 1919, the daughter of the late Robert Leroy and the late Bessie (Clark) Lindley. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of South Fork Friends Meeting, a Sunday school teacher and member of the church choir. She served as an elder, member of the Missionary Circle, a recording clerk for South Fork Friends and Western Quarterly Meeting of Friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homard H. Moon; brother, Ralph Lindley; and foster brother, Marvin Thompson. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Moon; one son, Ronald Lee (Hazel) Moon; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held February 19 at South Fork Friends Meeting with the Revs. Ricky Sessoms and Winfred Crouse officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Center of Alamance–Caswell or to South Fork Friends Meeting Fund or Cemetery Fund. MOORE Lee D. Moore, 61, January 6, 2008, Plainfield Friends, Indiana. Lee was born November 11, 1946, to the late Lee W. and Margaret Moore. He retired in 2006 from the Morley Group in Indianapolis after 10 years. He was a Vietnam veteran. His memberships included the Plainfield Friends Meeting, American Legion Post 64 in Wayne Township and the Beech Grove Fraternal Order of Eagels #4167, where he was past president. He still served the lodge at the district level. He was a former coach and umpire in the Plainfield Little League Association and was an avid fan of Plainfield High School football and college football. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn (Maxwell) Moore; son, Brian (Laurie) Moore; daughter, Rachel (Griancarlo) Spadone; brother, Bill (Ann) Westfall; sisters, Patricia and Leslie; and grandson, Ian J. Wilson. Funeral services were held January 9 in the Hampton Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, Indiana. Burial was in Sugar Grove cemetery with full military honors. SNOW Ola Gertrude Stewart Snow, 94, February 26, 2008, White Plains Friends, North Carolina. Ola was born to the late Rufus and Mary Etta Weatherman Stewart on September 1, 1913. She was the oldest living member of White Plains Friends Meeting and a homemaker. She was the widow of Positions Open Mitchell Thomas “Tom” Snow. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bill Snow and Donald Gray Snow; two sisters, Susie Keaton and Stella Venable; and a brother, Wiley Venable. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Snow Hamby and Ann and Bill Smith; two daughters-in-law, Carmen Hamby Snow and Carolyn Snow; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were conducted February 29 at White Plains Friends Meeting, with the Revs. Bill Watson and Wayne Johnson officiating. Memorials may be made to White Plains Meeting Friends Cemetery Fund. SOMMER Kathrina Sommer, 91, February 1, 2008, Plainfield Friends, Indiana. Kathrina was born January 23, 1917, in Kroisbach, Hungary, to Josef and Elisabeth (Adler) Speier. She was married to Karl Sommer for 64 years. He preceded her in death in 2003. She was a homemaker most of her life. As a former refugee, she and her family registered with the World Council of Churches in 1946, wishing to immigrate to the U.S. In 1956, the American Friends Service Committee, working together with Plainfield Friends Meeting, made it possible for the family to start a new life in Plainfield. Survivors include one daughter, Kathe Bryant; a grandson, Jeffrey Bryant; and great-granddaughters, Sarah and Anna Bryant. WILLIAMS Claude Moore Williams, 92, March 16, 2008, Science Hill Friends, North Carolina. Williams was born January 18, 1916, the son of the late Alson Elijah Williams and Mary Frye Williams. Williams was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Delinda Davis. Survivors include his wife, Grace S. Williams; daughters, Joyce (Gene) Steelman and Gail (Steve) Yates; son, Phil (Karen) Williams; brother, David L. Williams; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted March 19 at Science Hill Friends Meeting with Brady Morrison and Allen Bullard officiating. Memorials may be made to Science Hill Friends Meeting Building Fund. WINSLOW Evelyn Louise Blair Winslow, 91, March 15, 2008, High Point Friends, North Carolina. A native and life-long resident of Randolph County, she was born on February 16, 1917, the daughter of the late Allen Jay Blair and Mary Josephine Mendenhall Blair. She was a retired employee of the World War II War Department, Archdale Manufacturing Company and Phillips-Foscue. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading her Bible, learning about history, genealogy and quilting, having won several awards for her beautiful quilts. On October 8, 1938, she married Ray Robert Winslow, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her beloved brother, Jay Elwood Blair. Survivers include daughters, Judith Gail Winslow, Nancy Louise Winslow and Mary Linda Winslow (James) Vaughan; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four nieces; three nephews; and her beloved sister-in-law, Mildred Winslow Giles. A funeral service was held March 19 at Springfield Friends Meeting with the Revs. Kelly Kellum and Ray Luther officiating. WYATT Jammie Sue Hinshaw Wyatt, 69, January 27, 2008, Branon Friends, North Carolina. Sue was born March 7, 1938, to the late Josephine Hinshaw and Windle Prim. She worked in the medical field for the biggest part of her life. Sue was an amazingly caring and charitable woman and will forever be missed by her devoted husband and soul mate of 46 years, the Rev. Paul E. Wyatt; a son, Jamison (Shelley) Wyatt; a daughter, Mia (Michael) Steelman; two grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Wortham; a nephew; and a host of relatives and friends. Her funeral service was conducted January 30 at Gentry Family Chapel, with the Rev. Huey Parrish and Dr. Jim Murphy officiating.
