The theme for the new Triennium of Friends United Meeting is: “A Great People to Be Gathered.” In 1652, the founder of Quakerism, George Fox, “came near a very great hill, called Pendle Hill, and I was moved of the Lord to go up to the top of it; which I did with difficulty, it was so very steep and high. When I was come to the top, I saw the sea bordering upon Lancashire. From the top of this hill the Lord let me see in what places he had a great people to be gathered” (The Journal of George Fox, edited by Rufus M. Jones, Friends United Press, 1976, p. 150).
Friends, those places are right where you and I live. Those people are you, me, the members of our monthly and yearly meetings, and our neighbors. In the power of the Holy Spirit, Friends United Meeting can spark a renewal, a global movement to “gather people into fellowships where Jesus Christ is known, loved, and obeyed as teacher and Lord” (FUM’s mission statement). Friends are challenged to prayerfully envision the members, ministries, and resources of Friends United Meeting as part of a fresh movement of God’s Spirit in which we are gathered together, generously open to the Holy Spirit, to do the Lord’s work.
