About Friends United Meeting

We are an international association of Friends Meetings and Churches, organized for evangelism, global partnership, leadership development and communications.

Our purpose is "to energize and equip Friends through the power of the Holy Spirit to gather people into fellowships where Jesus Christ is known, loved and obeyed as Teacher and Lord."

Friends United Meeting, founded in 1902, includes 29 Yearly Meetings (regional associations) of Friends, along with several smaller groups, local meetings (churches) and affiliated organizations.

We work in cross-cultural missions and cooperative ventures with our member yearly meetings through our offices in Richmond, Indiana (USA) and Kisumu, Kenya.

Friends are known worldwide for their Peace Testimony.

About Friends

Listening to Christ:
a simple faith that transforms lives

Friends emphasize the living presence of Jesus Christ in our midst and try to organize our worship and our lives around that reality. Frequently Asked Questions.

"You Are Welcome Among Friends" is a quick invitation to explore life based on the new covenant that Jesus announced.

"The Quakers: Children of the Light" provides a short historical overview of the Friends movement, which began in England in the mid-seventeenth century.

"The Christian Faith of Friends" was approved for distribution by the North American Ministries Committee of FUM in 2004.

"The Declaration of Faith of 1887" is an historical statement of representatives of the "orthodox" yearly meetings who, in 1902 organized what is now Friends United Meeting.

"A Select List of Recommended Reading" gives titles of some books that will help explain the Quaker experience more fully.

Resources from Friends United Meeting. An easy way to order some of our pamphlets and a sample copy of Quaker Life magazine. (This method sends an email order to FUM.)

Visit the Friends United Press Shopping Center — an online source for books, curriculum, Quaker art prints and FUM resources for purchase or download (including "You Are Welcome Among Friends," "The Quakers: Children of the Light," and "The Christian Faith of Friends").

Organization

Friends Meetings (local churches) are organized regionally into autonomous "Yearly Meetings." These yearly meetings are reponsible for their own organization and prepare their own books of discipline, often called "Faith and Practice."

Friends United Meeting is governed by representatives of its member Yearly Meetings who do business at the Triennial Sessions and General Board.

Here is the Organization and Procedure of Friends United Meeting.
