FUM Announces Transition in Belize

For over 40 years, Friends United Meeting’s mission through the Belize Friends School has focused on “bridging the gap between poverty and possibility” by providing a second chance to inner-city youth who have failed in traditional educational settings. Over the past two years, FUM has been in a discernment process regarding how to more faithfully carry out our purpose statement in this region of the world and to do so in a sustainable way.

As we prepare to launch an expanded ministry in Belize, we want all Friends to know that Sam and Becky Barber will be concluding their ministry at Belize Friends School by the end of August 2014 and will be transitioning back to the United States by the end of the year. The Barbers arrived in Belize City in early 2009. During their time in Belize, Sam and Becky have served as Co-Directors of the School, as well as teaching in the classroom and hosting short-term mission teams. Their family of four children was joined by three Belizean children in 2010, and all seven of the children have been encouraged to take part in the ministry according to their unique gifts and leadings.

The entire Barber family has faithfully embodied the love of Christ in the lives of many teens and families in Belize City, and we invite you to join us in thanking God for their service. We urge all Friends to make an additional generous contribution to the Barber ministry account at this time, in order for them to end their service without a deficit.

Looking ahead, Friends United Meeting is preparing to re-launch a comprehensive and holistic ministry in Belize, one that will reach more people in more ways, partnering with God to transform Belize City into a place of peace, justice and hope in Jesus’ name. As ideas are explored, plans are made and funds are raised, we invite all Friends to pray for the future of the Friends mission in Belize.
