Friends in Belize

The Friends Boys School is currently the primary ministry of Friends United Meeting in Belize.  Founded by Friends in the 1970s, the school provides boys who did not pass their eighth grade exam with the opportunity to take another year of study and retake the exam. The school has had great success in producing high school graduates. Some alumni have gone on to attend university.

Sam and Becky Barber of Iowa Yearly Meeting served as principals of the Friends school from 2009 to 2014. At the conclusion of the Barber’s service, long-time Belizean teacher, Candi Young, was appointed Acting Principal. During the Barbers' years of service, the school grew and adapted to meet the evolving needs of the surrounding community. Belize Friends Boys School now accepts girls, and it recognizes that some of its students may need more than one year of study to pass the exam. Belize Friends School enjoys an excellent working relationship with the Belizean Ministry of Education and is gaining a wider reputation in Belize City. In addition, there is an emerging vision of planting a new Friends worship group and of expanding the ways that Friends minister in the context of the South Side of Belize City. Dale Graves of Western Yearly Meeting is currently on a one-year assignment to carry out a community needs assessment and to begin forming networks with other groups who are working in this area. Field Staff Reports: Sam & Becky Barber – January 2013

Our Belize Experience: Saying “Yes” to God

By Fred and Mildred Hoskins Over the past couple of years, we have had a few thoughts that volunteering in some capacity with a Friends’ project outside the U.S. might be a fulfilling experience. However, our age (75) and other obligations kept tempering our ambitions. We originally thought, with Fred’s interest in Quaker theology, biblical history and archeology, and with…

Blessed Connections in Belize — a letter from Becky Barber

April 2012 Dear Friends, Recently the blessings of being connected have been on my mind. It is difficult serving in a country where there aren’t many Quakers to lean on and share in those immediate moments of joy or concern. We have developed a really good team with our teacher, Ms. Candi (pictured at right, working with students in the…
