In 2009, Friends United Meeting planned to announce the appointment of Lon Fendall as principal/director of Friends Theological College in Kaimosi, Kenya. But situations sometimes change and certainly Lon and Raelene’s availability to move to Kenya changed when their daughter died unexpectedly and they took on parenting roles for three of their grandchildren. Still, they have a special interest in the work FUM is doing at Friends Theological College and continue to hear God’s call to serve in whatever ways they can.
We are especially glad that Ann Riggs will be staying in her role as principal during the coming year while we work on a plan for future leadership. Lon will serve as academic consultant responsible for staff development, curriculum revisions, the accreditation process and perhaps some fundraising. He will work closely with Ann, but mostly from his home in Oregon. With Lon’s assistance in the above named areas, Ann’s load will be a little lighter in her administrative duties which makes it more manageable for her to teach classes.
Lon will make as many as four trips in the next year to do the parts of his job that must be done on campus. He has already spent time in Kaimosi to lead a staff retreat and facilitate some student community building. Lon is quite familiar with East Africa and has done considerable leadership development among Friends in Rwanda and Burundi. Lon’s experience also includes working on the peace curriculum being developed for Friends high schools in East Africa, and being on staff at George Fox University, Tabor College and Wilmington College.
As a retiree from George Fox University, Lon is willing to provide this leadership to FTC without salary. FUM is committed to raising funds for his travel and living expenses while he is in Kenya, however. Therefore, we now invite your participation in this ministry by contributing to his expenses. Our goal for this fund is $12,000. You can send a check made out to Friends United Meeting and write “Lon Fendall” in the memo line. Or, you can go to the FUM Web site and make your contribution by credit card. One hundred percent of donations to Field Staff are placed in their ministry accounts. Thank you for participating in this ministry!
